Hi I’m Sonya Ceritano
I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, but after moving more than 30 times along the East Coast, home always felt temporary to me.
I spent 34 years working as a hairstylist, a job that relies on trust, conversation, and real connection. When you sit with someone for hours, you learn how to really listen. People want more than a service—they want to feel noticed.
Over time, I realized that what matters most to me is connection.
But deep down, I knew there was something more. I wanted to explore my roots and create a life that felt stable and true to who I am.
Ancestry
My father’s family comes from a small village in Teramo, Abruzzo. My mother’s side is from Gubbio, in Perugia, Umbria. Italy was never just a place to visit—it was always part of my story.
When I set out to get Italian citizenship through jure sanguinis, I was determined. I spent about a year gathering documents, tracking down records in different states, and dealing with lots of paperwork. After 48 months, in August 2022, I finally became an Italian citizen.
But I took my leap of faith even before the paperwork was done.
In July 2021, I packed up my life, sold almost everything I owned, and moved to Italy. I didn’t have all the answers, but I knew I had to give it a try.
For a while, I just floated—adjusting, learning, and trying to find my place in a new culture. Then, something changed.
After moving for so many years, I finally felt like I belonged.
Abruzzo won me over with its sea, mountains, vineyards, and olive groves. The wine, the cheese, and the simple food taste like they were made by someone’s grandmother. The towns have a quiet strength, and the people are warm and welcoming.
Connect with Abruzzo
With Abruzzo Sister Tours, my goal is to offer more than just travel. I want guests to see the Italy most people miss—to connect with their roots, share real meals, experience daily life, and fall in love with Abruzzo like I did.
After multiple moves, I’m happy to call Teramo and Abruzzo my home!
Come see it for yourself. I think you’ll understand why I stayed.
